I feel that this project went well at the start, my team and I were communicating well and getting all the pre production work complete, we also started to contact everyone that needed to be contacted via email when we figured out our idea. A few people did get back to us however more of the more important companies like the boat companies that we needed a reply from never got back to us.
When our first idea didnt work out we all stopped communicating as much, this was not the right thing, but eventually we came up with another idea and slowly started to communicate better.
I feel that this project could have gone a lot better, I know I could have and should have communicated with my team more than I did. I feel that some of the problems that occurred was because I never communicated with them that much.
When we finally did start filming our idea after talking properly about it, everything started to go a little better, there were days when we were filming that could have gone better, however on the last day we were able to get what we wanted.
If I coulf redo this project again I would make sure that I communicate better and work on my time keeping, I would also come to more of the workshops so that I had all the knowledge that I needed to complete this unit.

Documentary: Consent form & Script
This is the first script that we wrote for our first idea, I however do not have a copy of the script for our final production, the ideas are still very similar however. Also attached to this is the consent form that I made sure to receive from Allison who was our expert and presenter. I made sure to get the consent form to prove that she allowed us to film her for our documentary and did not film her without her permission. I also did this with a few of the volunteer, but they however did not mind us filming them working as long as we did not get in the way of their work.
Documentary: Screenshot research and planning
This is just a few screen shots of some of the research and planning that we did as a group before any filming, during our pre production stage of the unit. The majority of this research is for the first idea that we came up with as we thought that we would be sticking with that particular idea before we had to change things up last minute.
We had done quite a bit of research when starting this project for our first idea, we had all the planning mapped out, ready to film when we got the emails back that we needed. However when it came closer to filming we found that we had to change our idea as we were running out of time and had not heard back from some of the companies that we contacted.
Documentary: Planet Earth
Planet Earth is a documentary that ran in 2006 for 1 season with only 11 episodes. Each 50 minute episode features a global overview of different biome or habitat on Earth, usually consisting of, Polar, Mountains, Caves, Fresh Water, Seas, Oceans and forests, it is then followed by a 10 minute feature which takes the audience behind the scenes look at the challenges that the cast came across while filming that particular episode.
Planet Earth was produced by the BBC Natural History Unit, it was 5 years in the making and was one of the most expensive nature documentary series that was ever commissioned by the BBC and was also the first to be filmed in high definition. The show first premiered on 5th March 2006 in the UK on BBC 1 and had been shown in over 130 countries by June 2007.
The producer and director of the show was Alastair Fothergill, he is a British producer of nature documentaries for television and cinema.
From watching a couple of the episodes of this documentary I can see that it does not relate to my groups documentary idea in any way, the programme is a nature documentary, however the two plots are very different. Our documentary is very basic compared to this one which is quite understandable considering that we were given a 10 minute time slot and this programme had an hour.

Documentary: Shoot Day
When it came to shoot day we first decided that we would walk the Medway Smile, we started off in Maidstone and started to make our way to Rochester. We took the public path along the river hoping to get some shots of the wildlife and nature around the banks of the river, however, we never came across much that we could use in the time we walked. We did not get much from this shoot so we decided on plan B.
After the first day of shooting, we found a place called Kent Wildlife Trust, they are a company based in Maidstone that work with volunteers, they aim to work with people at all levels to bring about a renaissance of the natural heritage through the local and national programme of a living landscape and living seas.
The first day shooting with them we were only able to shoot around where they are based and the sites they have to offer, we were given permission to film on site, this included any nature and wildlife that was around. We managed to film quite a bit on this day, being able to film around the site was an interesting experience and taught me a lot about what they really do there.
The second day we filmed with them was where we got the main concept of what we really needed. We were given the opportunity to go out with one of the experts from the trust and a few volunteers, we were given permission to film them working on fixing up the fence and to film around the area a little and to explore around by ourselves filming what we thought interesting. We were also able to get an interview from the expert and she told about what the volunteers were doing and what the Kent Wildlife Trust does as an actual company.

Documentary: Channel Eden
Within this unit, we have to make a 10 minute documentary on doorstep wildlife and nature for the channel Eden, the channel airs many shows about wildlife and nature so we have to create a documentary that fits in with this channel. However, the channel also airs shows that are more scientific.
Many shows that air on this channel typically have presenters, in our documentary we have chosen to not really have a presenter but we will have an expert that we will be able to interview during filming. The expert will give us all the information that will be needed, so in a way the expert does work as a presenter.
The time slot that our documentary would air on the channel would be 8.00pm, I looked deeper into what aired around that time on the channel and I found that more nature and wildlife programmes are played around this time so the documentary that we have to make would fit in well with the chosen time slot.

Editing Workshop
From this workshop I learned a lot, I learned so many new skills when coming to editing, beforehand I did not feel confident in myself when I thought of editing our group documentary, however, after this workshop I do feel more confident in myself, it has shown me some new styles that I could possibly use.

Documentary: Final Idea
Final Idea
After a discussion that my group and I had, we have finally come up with our final idea after debating which idea we liked the best. We came to the conclusion that we wanted to mix two ideas together.
We have decided to go with the idea based along, A Day In Medway, this would consist of us going out on a boat and film across the river. We have found a few boating companies that we have emailed and they have all said that they would be willing to take us out filming, we just need to decide what would be our best option for this. We would need to consider safety risks and money.
While on the boat we would film the wildlife around the small different islands that we have seen are around the river, we have though that maybe we might not be able to get shots of the wildlife, it all depends on whether the wildlife is out on the day we choose to film, however if this was to happen we would still be able to film all of our establishing shots, so it wouldnt be a complete waste of time.
I have also been in contact with the Wildwood Trust and The Fox Project, they have both said that we would be able to film the foxes, we would have liked to been able to film the foxes being rescued however it is unlikely that this would be able to happen, however they have told me that we would be able to go into the Intensive Care Unit of The Fox Project and film how they take care of the foxes after they get rescued and all the after care that they receive before the staff figure out if they are able to go into the wild or get sent to the Wildwood Trust to be cared for if they are unable to go back into the wild.
We have chosen to focus our documentary on:-
- Urban foxes in Chatham/Rochester/Gillingham and Herne Bay area
- Seals in a wider estuary
- Ocean/estuary birds around river side park area
- Any other associated wildlife along the bans of Medway
Area's that we have chosen to shoot in:-
- Herne Bay - Wildwood Trust
- Tunbridge - The Fox Project
- Riverside Country Park
- Medway Estuary
- Rochester
- Chatham Riverside Areas
- Chatham Historic Docs
'From Strood Bridges to the Medway Basin, from Historic Rochester town to the Darnet and Hoo Forts, we'll be taking a look at the wildlife, from urban foxes in Chatham and Rochester, to the Seals and birds of the Medway Estuary, this is A Day on the Medway.'
Our angle is the post industrial wasteland slowly becoming a naturalistic paradise, our major sections are:-
Urban Foxes - We will look into the urban fox infestation threatening Medway, focusing upon the rescue and the packs operating in the area, as well at parks around Medway that help to rescue these foxes and their after care.
Seals - We will be looking at the mammalian species that inhabit the Medway Estuary, focusing on the seal community and other aquatic or marine beings.
Sea/River/Estuary Birds - Lastly we will be looking at the local Avian population, focusing upon the wetland and ex industrial sites along the Medway and their avian residents, we will also be looking at the mudbank worn that earned Medway its maritime conservation status.

Documentary: Idea and Early Research
For this unit we have been given the task to work in groups to create a documentary based around doorstep wildlife and nature around Kent, individually we all have to come up with at least one idea before we decide as a group which idea we would like to base our final documentary on. Our idea has to fit in with the channel Eden, I am not familiar with this channel at all so I have done some research to try and familiarise myself with it.
What is Eden?
Eden is the TV channel to watch for the best in wildlife and sciene. Eden features some of the very best of the BBC's Natural History Unit with Sir David Attenborough, Eden basically aims to show the world in all its beauty and wonder. This means they show everything from animal behaviour and landscapes to cutting edge science and life endangering exploration.
My Idea
When I first saw what our brief was, I got thinking about all the wildlife I had seen around Medway, I first thought about basing my idea off of birds that I have seen around, I have seen many different species of birds flying around while walking around Medway, and then I had seen foxes running about at night so I thought maybe I could base my idea off of them.
I then came across this Wesbite: http://www.wildwoodtrust.org/index.html
The park is based in Kent so would not be too hard to access and I would get into contact with them to see if it would be possible for me to film there. Some of the animals that are based in this park are animals that you can find on your door step so to speak.
While around Medway I have seen Foxes, Birds and Bats, they have all these animals in the park, I feel I could cover some good content from working at this park, and I would also see if the workers and vonlunteers at the park would talk about the different animals that they have rescued and how the park actually works with all the volunteers and the adoption packages.

Evaluation
Drama
I quite enjoyed working on this project, however I feel I could have done much better. My drama did not turn out the way that I would have like and I feel like my vision as a director reflected in the scenes. This is down to my poor organisation skills, I lacked in this a lot this project and I wish I could change that.
When it came to finding actors, I found some, however, they kept dropping out on me last minute or was not available when I would have wanted to film, in the end I had to use two actors that had, had no experience with acting before but they had tried my best.
When it came to editing my drama, I struggled a lot, I found that I did not cover all the shots that I wanted, this was mostly my master shots, I feel I did not cover enough of them, or even my smaller shots that I needed, I want to and need to improve on this so I can make editing easier form myself and so that I can feel proud of what I actually create in the end.
Self Portrait
When we were first told about the self portrait I was excited because I had many ideas going through my mind that I would like to have tried, however in the end this did not happen because I lacked in being organised for this project. I would have liked to be able to have filmed in the place that I grew up, Scotland, however I knew this would have been impossible as it is so far away and a very long drive away, so I opted for a beach around Kent that was similar to one in Scotland.
Overall, I was quite disappointed in myself with how I went about this project, if I was to go back and do again, I would make sure that I plan better and have everything organised better, I want to be able to reflect on all the things I did wrong with this project and do much better on the next project so that I can improve not only myself but also my work and creative skills.

Director - Tim Burton
Tim Burton
Tim Burton was born in Burbank, California, he had spent most of his childhood drawing cartoons and watching old movies. After graduating high school he attended California Institute of the Arts, like many other people who graduated from this college, his first job was as an animator for Disney.
His early film career was fueled by almost unbelievable good luck, but it was his talent and originality that kept him at the top of Hollywood, he had worked on films such as The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron. Disney had recognised his talent and gave him the go to make Vincent, an animated story about a boy who wanted to be just like Vincent Price.
Tim Burton has a specific directors style to him, he has quite a dark and artistic style, by watching any of his films you would not have to know that he was the director, you would know from paying attention to the style that the film is actually made in.
Tim Burton is a director that I look up to as a director, I have always loved his style and I would like his style to somehow show in my future filmmaking. I think that if Tim was to direct my chosen drama, he would not change to much about it, Fringe is quite a dark and mysterious show as it is.
Directions: Pre Prooduction
Storyboard
As well as doing a storyboard for my self portrait I also did one for my Drama, this is just a very rough sketches of what I want to happen in my drawing, drawing this storyboard helped to make filming much easier for me and my actors. My actors were able to visualise what I want to happen and they followed these directions well.
Shotlist
Having this shotlist made the shoot much easier, I had this on me at all times when I was shooting my drama, it helped me to establish what shots I really wanted to capture, this along with the storyboard helped my actors to follow directions.
Location
My original plan was to film in the woods and in a park, however that became harder than I though because by the time my actors were available in the evening it had become too dark for the camera to actually pick them up in the distance so I chose to change my locations all together and shoot inside a house. I still tried to keep the scenes similar to the original as much as I could.
Casting
I had gone through many actors, at first I had the perfect two however I kept having people drop out of the production last minute meaning I had to keep pushing my production, I soon the found two back ups but they had also dropped out last minute, I also found people that were not available around the time that I would liked to have filmed. In the end I found two people that were willing to be in my production, however they had not had any past acting experience, but they were willing to try their best so I agreed to use them, in the end they came through for me and did the best they possibly could.
Directions: The art of directing
When I think of a director I automatically think of someone who is confident in what they do and someone who is ready to take on any task. Being a director consists of many jobs, you have to be ready to take on anything and give it your all, I think of it as you are running a team, if you are not confident on what you do when directing then your crew wont feel confident in what they do or you.
One of the first known directors was George II, the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen (1826-1914), it is to be said that he was the birth of directors. George II is credited as the first modern director and his wealth allowed him to construct his own theatre and organise a resident company of actors and artists.
Some things that a director has to go over before any rehearsal or filming can happen is the theme, characters, language, plot and most importantly the script. The director has to cast the right actors to suit certain characters from a production.
Some of the many responsibilities that a director holds are, they have to read and reread a script over and over again so that they can come up with a vision of the story and so they are able to visualise locations and how they would like the characters to look. Directors and producers will work closely together to cast people for a production and do location scouting along with many other aspects of a production. They will also work closely with the director of photography to decide where the cameras will be placed when it comes to filming and where actors will need to be placed.
One of the main aspects that a director needs to think about is budget, they have to be able to create and carry out the entire production in the set budget, if the director was to go over budget then it is possible that the production could not be completed. Depending on the type of production and how big the production actually is, depends on what the set budget is for the director.

Director - Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential film personalities in the history of film, he is perhaps one of Hollywood's best known directors, and is perhaps one of the most wealthiest filmmakers in the world. He has countless big-grossing, critically acclaimed credits to his name as a producer, director and writer.
One of his first major directorial efforts was The Sugarland Express (1974), this film marked his as a rising star, it was however his next effort that made him an international superstar among directors, this film was Jaws (1975). In 1982 he produced and directed two films, the first was Poltergeist, however the highest grossing movie of all time up to that point was the alien story E.T. The Extra - Terrestrial.
Steven Spielberg has always interested me when it came to directing, I like the style that he has, when watching one of his films you automatically know that it is him that directed the film. All the films that he has directed have a specific tone to them.
I like the colours that Spielberg uses, in my drama I too want to use similar colours to what he has used, I think these colours would go well with my chosen scenes and help to make it more dramatic and go well with the storyline.

Supernatural - TV Drama
8.6/10
Creator: Eric Kripke
Seasons: 11 (2005 - Present)
Directors(most frequent): Robert Singer (33 episodes - 2005-1015) Philip Sgriccia (33 episodes - 2006 - 2015) Kim Manners (17 episodes - 2005 - 2008)
Main Cast: Jarad Padalecki (as Sam Winchester) Jensen Ackles (as Dean Winchester) Misha Collins (as Castiel) Jim Beaver ( as Bobby Singer)
Two brother follow in their fathers footsteps as 'hunters' fighting off evil supernatural beings of many kind including monsters, demons and gods that roam the earth.
I chose this series too because it is also similar to my drama, even though in my drama they are not fighting off supernatural beings, the tone is very similar and the directing style, both series are quite dark and there is a lot of similarities centred around both.
Terra Nova - TV Drama
6.8/10
Creator: Kelly Marcel and Craig Silverstien
Seasons: 1 (2011)
Directors: Jon Cassar (5 episodes) Karen Gaviola (2 episodes) Alex Graves (2 episodes) Nelson McCormick (2 episodes) Bryan Spicer (2 episodes)
Terra Nova follows the Shannon family, they are an ordinary family from 2149, when the planet is dying they are transported back 85 million years to prehistoric earth where they join Terra Nova, A colony of humans with a second chance to build a civilizations.
I chose this series because I think that it is similar to my chosen drama in many ways, the directing style seems similar. In this series, it is set in the future and they are sent back in time to try and help rebuild the planet in their future, whereas my drama series they are set in current time but a parallel universe has been created and the main cast have to try and find things that stop people from entering and interfering with the parallel universe.
I found that the tone used in both of these series are similar too, they are both quite dark with some bright spots with certain episodes, I want to focus on the tone of both the series because I feel it is a large aspect to my chosen drama.
Directions: Drama: Location Recce
When decided what locations I want to use for my drama piece, I looked into what locations were used in the original series scenes. The first scene takes place in a location that looks to be near an abandoned building, I however could not find any locations like this around the Medway area so I have decided that I will be filming in the woods, the location is similar to the original. I wanted to keep this scene simple and I found that filming in the woods will do this, the two characters can interact without any interruptions. The scene is also filmed at night and I found that, that would be a little hard so I have decided to film in the evening when there is still some natural light but it doesnt make it to bright if I were too filming during the day. The second location that is used is the park in the second scene, I have decided that I will stick to the original location and film in a park, I have found many parks that I think would be a good place to film and have narrowed it down to one park that I would like to film at, this scene is going to be filmed throughout the day. The last location I have quite figured out where that will be filmed, I want to try and keep it close to the original scene but that is proving to be harder than I thought, I have tried to find some places that are similar to the room, but I think I am going to have to steer away from that location completely. Instead I was thinking about filming in a basement instead as that seems to be the closest thing to the original location, the basement lets off as a cold, isolated room and that is what the location in the last scene lets off and I wanted to try and keep that sense in my drama.

This is the second scene that I will be recreating.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol is another photographer that I came across while researching different artists. His work explores the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement flourished in the 1960's.
Andy worked on something called Camouflage Self Portrait, this the photo above Andy had combined a polaroid photo of himself and layered it with a hot pink and red camouflage pattern, contrasting the individuality of portraiture with the uniformity of camouflage. The picture stares out at the viewer and is screened with that offers the illusion of personal protection but could also imply danger. This piece of art is within a series of camouflage paintings and was created in 1986. Andy was intrigued by the use of camouflage in the military and in fashion as an ambiguous instrument that could either conceal or call attention to the wearer.
Shot list - Self Portrait.

This is just a rough outline of my shotlist, I will be doing a much more detailed one. When filming my self portrait I would like to use every day sounds instead of background music, such as the sounds of the waves.

Storyboard
I decided that I would create a storyboard instead of a script for the self portrait film, this is because I dont really have a storyline behind this, I have decided that I just want to show a montage of the three things that I like most, this being the beach, music, photography and my past memories of my childhood and friends.
I havent gone into too much detail with the storyboard, I have just shown a basic outline of what I would like to happen in the film, with this I can visualise better what I want to happen, and when the time comes to filming I will know what to film within each scene instead of spending time thinking about what I want to be in each particular scene.
In the storyboard there is a brief description of what I would like to happen and the kind of shots that I want to be taken, I have done this so my camera operator knows what shots to use when the times comes.
I have numbered each scene so I know what order they go in, this will help me when the times comes that I need to film, I found that using a storyboard in the first project made it easier to film and not go off track, so I hope that it helps me more within this project.
Casting
I have decided that I will not be casting any actors or actresses to be in my self portrait, I have decided that I will cast in the film myself, I chose to do this because I wanted to portray who I am the best I could and because I feel that the film is going to be quite personal to me with there being pictures of me from my childhood so I thought it would be best for me to do it myself.
The video that I am doing has no dialogue with not much of a story being told. The story of the film itself is going to be more of a montage of clips showing what I like the most and what i feel best describes who I am as a person.

Mood Board
As a part of my research I have collected some images similar to ones that I would like to recreate when it comes to filming my self portrait, I have placed these images into a mood board to create the sort of tone that I would like to portray. The images that I have selected are similar to the type of shots that I want to recreate. Some of the shots a scenic shots, these are there to help me create a certain type of atmosphere and to help get across what type of scene I want to set, these type of shots I will use to help establish what I am filming and lets the audience know exactly where I am. Other shots are the things that I would like to include into my film, they are the things that I enjoy the most, the shots are also to help set what sort of colour tone I would like my film to be, I love the tone of natural light.
For my ending shot I would like to have myself stood at the beach, preferbally at night, or if this does not work then at sunset, stood in the distance with a camera taking a shot of the sky.
Portrait: Artist Research - Cristina Otero
Cristina Otero
Cristina Otero is a Spanish photographer currently living in Madrid, she is known for her work of self portraits. Otero started photography at the age of 13, and by the age of 15 she had her very first solo exhibition at the Kir Royal Gallery.
What I think I like most most about Otero's work is that a lot of it comes of as dark and something we would not expect to see, however there are times where she would use bright and vibrant contrasts to showcase something completely different.
Initial Idea
Initial Ideas Development
Idea 1
One if the first ideas that I first had was to have something to do with the beach, this is because I have always loved the beach and spending time at the beach, I also grew up around the beach. I would of at first liked to have filmed in Scotland where I spent a lot of my childhood, however that was not possible as I would need to be there for about a week and I would have no way of getting myself or my actors there. So I decided any beach would be good enough.
When thinking about the beach, I though how would I be able to fit it into my self portrait, I then thought that I would like to have photos of me from my childhood added in, and then I thought how I like taking walks down the beach.
So the final idea for this was that I would be walking down the beach and I along the way I would find baby photos of myself scattered around, further along the walk the more pictures I found, the older I got in them, the last picture that I would find would be the most recent pictures of myself.
Idea 2
Another idea that I had was to create a morphing video, I always found this types of videos interesting and to be able to do one of these videos for myself would be fun, I have enough pictures of myself from when I was younger to be able to do this, I would start of from when I was a baby and gradually morph the pictures into who I am today.
Idea 3
The last Idea that I had is very similar to the first one, I have always been into collages, I thought of having pictures of me hanging around a room from my childhood, however I would have things that I enjoy doing around the room too, things such as photohraphy, having my camera in the room with some of my photography around the room, photos of me with friends together, music, just the general things that I enjoy doing in my spare time.
Ideas
While researching what I could do with my self portrait film, I was watching many different videos trying to get some inspiration on what I could do, I then came across this video, its a video that shows how a young girl has gown and changed over the years of her life. The technique that had been used was the morphing technique.
Before starting any of my research, I was thinking that I would like to use this technique when creating my self portrait, I think it would be a nice way to show a way of change. I have many photos of me from my childhood so the video would be something that I would be able to create, I also feel this would be a fun way of showing how I have changed and who I have become.

Idea Development
While researching and thinking about what I could do for my self portrait film, I came across this short film on YouTube, I was intrigued to watch it so I could see what other people had created when making self portrait films.
This is a film by a guy named Tom Thompson, I came across this short film randomly, when watching the film I found that the ideas I thought of have some similarities to this film, I want to be able to express who I am through the film that I will be creating.
In my own film I would like to express who I was and who I am now, I though of maybe using some photos from when I was a child to now, this shows who I am and how I have changed. I think this would be a simple but effective way of illustrating change and helps to express who I really am.

Group Portrait Project
Group Portrait
During class we were asked to get into groups of 4/5 and make a 2-4 minute self portrait video, this was to give us different ideas and would allow us to experiment when it came to making our own self portrait videos.
I think this small project went really well, at first I thought it was going to be quite hard, with having four different directional styles and inputs, however we all found a way to work together and we were all able to all get our ideas out. We began to brainstorm all the different ideas and found that we all had similar ideas so this made it easier to come up with our final idea.
We came up with some ideas based on time and how our personalities portray who we are, when it came to the filming and our end result, it didnt exactly end how our brainstorming was. Instead we just went with the flow while still kind of sticking to our brainstorm.
When it came to filming, we all took it in turns to film each other, so we each had time to practice what we wanted to do, it was important for everyone to be able to get the shot in focus, to make sure we had all the shots in focus we used the features Zebra and Peaking. I found that the shooting went really well, we had a lot of space in the room and we chose a room with big windows so we had a lot of natural light.
With the end result I was quite happy with how it actually turned out, even though it was very different to what we had originally planned, I liked the way it turned out, it was something different to anything ive done before, I never knew how to edit the way we did so it was good to learn a new way of editing things.
I liked the idea that we used when we put different points of our faces together in the edit to make it one face, I think this worked really well and is something that I would like to try again.
